Paradip or Paradeep is an important seaport town in Jagatsinghpur district of Odisha, India. Paradip Beach offers a gorgeous view of the Bay of Bengal. Paradip Port lies at a distance of 210 nautical miles from Kolkata in West Bengal and 260 nautical miles from Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. According to the census of the year 2001, the population of Paradip was 73633. The avg. literacy rate of the town is 73 percent.
History of Paradip
The seed of evolution of Paradip port lies in the development of its port. Once connected with Cuttack through river Mahanadi and its branches, the city got separetd from the same due to silting of the river bed. However to remain connected with Paradip, Britishers in 1819 constructed a sort of a harbour called False Point. During the famine of 1866, Paradip was used as the main entry point for import of food materials to other parts of the country.
The city saw the upcoming of full fledged port only after independence. On 3 January 1962, the then Prime Minister of India late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru laid the foundation stone for Paradip Port. The port got completed in 1965 and was taken over by the Government of India from the State Government on 1 June 1965. It was declared open on 12 March 1966. Located on the eastern part of the country, it was declared as the 8th major port of India. The Paradip Port Trust came into being in 1967 for development and management of the Port.
Geography of Paradip
Paradip is positioned at 20.16 degrees in the North and 86.40 degrees in the East. The avg. elevation of the town is 3.3 feet or 1 meter. Paradip Port is strategically located in the Bay of Bengal. The summers in Paradeep are hot and humid. Being a coastal town it remains prone to monsoon winds and rains. Winters are relatively moderate at this part of Odisha.
Economy of Paradip
The economy of the town top much extent depoends upon Paradip Prt which is one of the largest port on India's east coast. It handles over million tonnes cargo every year. It is through this port that coal and iron ore are exported and imported. There is a mammoth sized storage area to store about 1000 TEUs (20 ft). Paradip Refinery is also generator of employment in the region. Apart from it there are a number of small scale industries, petrochemical complex and alumina refineries for the sustenance of the town. Many multinational companies are also looking forward to expand their base in this important town of Odisha.
